Talking Points on the Schaivo Case
The Terri Schiavo case seems to be making more Americans aware of the fundamental changes in the Republican party that have taken place over the past ten years. The new Republican party has abandoned basic conservative principles and taken to extraordinary levels of hypocrisy to please the religious right. Consider the following:
- President Bush, who executed more people than any governor in history and opposed reforming clemency procedures, has now decided that “it is wise to err on the side of life.”
- The Schaivo case was addressed by the Florida state courts and legislature. The result was not what the right would have wanted; so states’ rights, a cornerstone of conservative philosophy, went right out the window.
- Michael Schiavo has been battling for years now to honor what he believes are his wife’s wishes. Didn’t we hear a lot about the sanctity of marriage not so long ago from the folks opposing him?
It’s a great thing to see that the majority of Americans still value individual liberty enough to oppose Congress’s intrusion into this matter.
